That day, Awaji Island woke up to a quiet morning, just like any other.
It has been a quarter of a century since I first became interested in the existence of Godzilla after accidentally finding some documents in my seminar professor’s reference room during my university days, and then learned of the existence of the National Gojira Awaji Island Research Institute, a research institute (and a national one at that) that specializes in Godzilla.
At the time, the National Awaji Island Godzilla Research Institute was in the midst of a period of inactivity for the umpteenth time in its history, and the fact that the institution itself did not even exist, even if I had tried to enter, was a great blow to me as a young person. However, with the help of my former teacher, who had been the catalyst for me learning about its existence, I was able to join the institute as a newly hired researcher when it was rebuilt and revived as the International Awaji Island Godzilla Research Center (NIGOD).
More than twenty years have passed since then, and it was a dawn far too quiet for the existence of Godzilla to have been publicly announced and for its imminent appearance to have occurred.
By that day, the evacuation of Awaji Island’s residents had already been completed, and the only people remaining on the island were us NIGOD staff members and several dozen members of the “Anti-Godzilla Special Forces (tentative name)” dispatched by the Self-Defense Forces.
At that time, I had become completely accustomed to early morning life thanks to the various commands that were part of the Self-Defense Forces’ morning routine, and that day I was waking up and taking a sip of bancha tea.
Suddenly, an alarm that I had only heard during evacuation drills rang out from the speakers inside the laboratory.
There was no need to hear the announcement that followed.
It’s finally here.

Godzilla, an extraordinary giant creature that is said to have landed on Awaji Island 111 years ago, has finally appeared. He is an incredible creature with an incredible life force that no other living creature possesses, and unique cells that contain unknown and uncertain elements.
A strange sense of elation rose in my heart.
The traces left behind by Godzilla’s enormous body cannot be described as friendly to humanity, and numerous small-scale damages have been reported, including to civilian fishing boats and wild whales.In fact, on Awaji Island, all residents except for NIGOD staff and the Self-Defense Forces have been forced to evacuate.
Despite the appearance of such a dangerous unknown creature, my heart was racing.
No, there was no way I wouldn’t dance.
The same is likely true for other NIGOD staff members. 100 years have passed since the founding of the original Army Gojira Research Institute, and a mysterious giant creature that was said to be a legendary entity has finally appeared.
For this moment, we have spent half our lives, and for the most senior staff, more than three-quarters of our lives, here on Awaji Island, conducting secret research that we cannot even tell our families or lovers about.
Come on, Godzilla.
