“From the diary of a NIGOD employee, 2010/09/25” (Part 2)
How much time has passed since you sat down at your desk?
As I impatiently shifted the images from the surveillance camera installed on the Awaji Bridge to the edge of the monitor, I was busy reconfirming all the predicted patterns for the “Godzilla interception operation,” as well as a mountain of confirmation work, such as reconfirming the total amount of “G-cell activity inhibitor” that would be our trump card, and the Self-Defense Forces’ special warheads that would be used in operation.
Furthermore, they had to gather information that was still full of uncertainties, such as the size of Godzilla that could currently be estimated through their superiors who were in talks with the government, and no matter how many assistants they had, it was not enough.
“There’s so much trouble everywhere.”
Just as I was about to let out a complaint, the speaker in the lab suddenly started ringing.
“Godzilla has been spotted in the waters off Awaji Island. I repeat, Godzilla has been spotted in the waters off Awaji Island!”
As soon as I heard that tense voice, I turned my eyes back to my monitor.
The window, which was shared in real time on NIGOD’s internal network, clearly displayed the image of Godzilla in a telephoto lens.
What a size! It far exceeds our expectations.
Is this size enough for a G cell activity inhibitor?
Even if you can confirm the effect, it’s meaningless if the amount is not enough.
A hint of anxiety crosses my mind.
Soon, the assistants’ terminals start to show the predicted length and weight of Godzilla as inferred from the footage, along with the amount of G-cell activity inhibitor needed to achieve the desired effect.
This is the limit of what we can do for now. In the near future, as the operation begins, the Self-Defense Forces’ patrol aircraft and drones will share more detailed images of Godzilla. For now, all we can do is submit these to our higher-ups.
Once again, a voice comes from the speaker.
This time it was a strangely calm female voice, different from the previous one.
“The government has just decided to launch Operation Godzilla Intercept. The operation will begin at 12:55. All personnel should immediately take up their designated positions and prepare for operations. I repeat, the operation will begin at 12:55.”
I looked at the clock and saw that we had five minutes to get ready, but we were already in position and getting ready meant pausing the ongoing forecast calculations.
Now that Godzilla has finally appeared, the predictive data is no longer useful, so there’s no need to save it.
Before I knew it, I had cleared my desk, which had become piled high with documents, to make room for my work.
“Notice to all staff: We are now commencing the Godzilla interception operation. We are now commencing the Godzilla interception operation.”
Along with the announcement, the sound of Self-Defense Force fighter jets taking off can be heard in the distance.
The sound of the drone flying overhead from afar and echoing off the coast of Awaji was like a signal for the start of battle. (Continued)
