“From the diary of a NIGOD employee, 2010/09/25” (part 2)

I quickly changed my clothes and headed to my workplace, the lab.

It is only a few minutes’ walk from the staff accommodation to the NIGOD main building (this is a tentative name; it does not have an official name, but it has recently been called “NIGOD Headquarters”), but on this particular day I naturally found myself walking quickly.

The NIGOD Biochemistry Research Group First Laboratory, to which I belong, is located at the back of the first floor of the main building.

As usual, I walked through the entrance and down the side of the large central staircase, and the place was unusually crowded with researchers, other NIGOD staff, and Self-Defense Force personnel.

There was probably some interaction between the government and the “Central Intelligence Room” (note: this is the name of the department, not the room) on the upper floor.

Even if you don’t ask here, you will have to ask if you go to the lab.

I quickly headed to the lab, unlocked the security with the ID hanging from my neck, and entered, where nearly half of the researchers had already rushed in, but all of them only had second- or third-class qualifications.

This means that until a researcher of the lab director class arrives, I, who is qualified as a first-class researcher, will have to take charge of this place.

“Good morning, how’s the situation?”

I spoke to the research assistant near my desk, and she rambled on rather quickly.

“We have just confirmed an abnormal rise in temperature in the waters off Awaji Island. The Central Intelligence Agency has just notified the government that this is a sign of Godzilla’s appearance and has requested the launch of a Godzilla intercept operation.”

“What’s the government’s response?”

“Not yet, but I don’t think it’s too late.”

It was shortly after that.

An alarm sounded on everyone’s devices, including mine, signaling an emergency call, and at the same time an announcement blared from the rarely used public address system speaker.

“We have just confirmed an abnormal rise in sea surface temperature off the coast of Awaji Island. We at NIGOD believe this is a sign of Godzilla’s appearance and have notified the government, requesting the launch of a ‘Godzilla intercept operation.'”

We’ve already heard that much, but the problem comes after that.

“We have just received notification from the government that the request has been accepted and approved. We repeat, the government has approved the launch of Operation Godzilla Intercept.”

Suddenly the hall became excited.

This is no surprise, as until now the only evidence of its existence has been a few unknown cells, footprints, and legends, but it is finally coming into view.

The long-awaited moment is finally here.

I remained as calm as possible and informed the staff in the room.

“Everyone, take up your positions. If everything goes according to plan, the Self-Defense Forces will be sending out drones and reconnaissance aircraft to gather information immediately. We can only observe our targets through monitors. Do not overlook even the smallest changes, and take note of anything that concerns you, and report or propose anything if necessary.”

“yes!”

With the excited responses of the young researchers behind me, I sat down at my desk nearby and turned on my monitor.

I felt my back suddenly break out in sweat and my heart pounding in anticipation of the unprecedented observation and experiment that was about to begin.

In an attempt to calm myself down, I picked up a can of coffee, which someone must have prepared for me, and took a sip.

The assistant from before is looking at me. Is there something he wants to report?

“That’s mine…”

“Sorry, I’ll pay later.”

In exchange for a little embarrassment, I was finally able to calm down a little. (Continued)
