“From the diary of a NIGOD employee, 2010/09/25 (final part)
The monitor displayed a very strange image.
A mysterious creature, easily over 100 meters tall and by far the largest creature humans have ever seen, is walking across the sea towards Awaji Island.
Behind this gigantic creature, what appeared to be its tail could be seen peeking out from under the water, and a mixture of excitement and fear began to boil in my chest as I wondered how many hundred meters long this creature might be.
The creature, Godzilla, is being guided by a Self-Defense Force aircraft towards Awaji Island.
The whole idea of the “Godzilla interception operation” was to bring it to a pre-set “explosion point,” stop it half-buried alive by a mine explosion, and then inject it with the “G-cell activity inhibitor” that we at NIGOD had developed.
It’s extremely simple, but the key is that all you need is to inject the activity inhibitor.
When facing an unprecedented, gigantic creature, a simple strategy like this allows for flexible response.
Meanwhile, Godzilla made landfall on Awaji Island.
“Godzilla has just landed on Awaji Island. Godzilla has landed on Awaji Island.” The lab’s speakers keep reporting the situation, but most of the researchers are busy doing various calculations and watching recorded footage streamed by the Self-Defense Forces on the monitors at their desks.
They are busy checking everything.
Godzilla is walking through the deserted streets of Awaji Island after the evacuation of residents has been completed.
The images show members of the Self-Defense Forces carrying various weapons and pursuing Godzilla from a distance, so as not to unnecessarily provoke him.
“If Godzilla were to suddenly go on a rampage right now, what would happen to these people?” I couldn’t help but imagine some unpleasant things, but as Godzilla gradually approached the “explosion point,” my anxiety and tension completely took away any time to think about such things.
Before the announcement could be finished, “Godzilla has arrived at the explosion point. Godzilla has arrived at the explosion point,” a series of loud explosions was heard, along with a tremendous shaking like a major earthquake, and at the same time, Godzilla on the monitor was enveloped in a thick cloud of smoke.
The mines exploded all at once, turning a wide area under Godzilla’s feet into rubble and dragging him underground.
Cheers of “Ohhh…!” could be heard from rooms all around the building, but the operation was not over yet.
After this, they must check how buried Godzilla is and then fire a G-cell activity suppression warhead into its mouth.
But the next moment, we witness something unbelievable.
A mysterious purple light can be seen from within the still-rising plume of earth and sand. There’s no way that weapon was part of the plan.
A researcher who was checking Godzilla’s body temperature with a thermograph shouted, “We’ve detected a high-temperature heat source reaction inside Godzilla’s body!”
High fever? Could Godzilla really breathe fire?
The next moment, there was a tremendous rumble, followed by Godzilla’s roar, an incredible flash of light that sounded like tens of thousands of camera flashes going off simultaneously, and then an unidentifiable roar.
Then, as Godzilla lay on its side, a purple flash of light was emitted from its mouth, blowing away the smoke, and several monitor images were filled with a storm of static and shut down.
Suddenly, the whole building erupted in excitement. Godzilla was indeed a superhuman creature far beyond our imagination.
With the exception of a few filming drones, almost all information was cut off.
The only thing that can monitor Godzilla’s condition now is the few surviving drones that are used to take pictures.
However, the sudden high heat and other electromagnetic waves caused images to become distorted and accurate flight was impossible, resulting in a terrible situation.
At that moment, an announcement echoed through the loudspeakers for the second time throughout the building.
“JSDF aircraft launches G cell suppression warhead. I repeat, JSDF aircraft launches G cell activity inhibitor.”
By a stroke of luck, the Self-Defense Forces’ fighter jets survived the mysterious attack from Godzilla and launched the G-cell activity suppression warheads as planned.
There were several violent shakings and roars, and then Godzilla’s mournful roar, clearly different from before.
There was no need to hear an announcement; the G-cell activity suppression warhead exploded into Godzilla’s mouth as planned.
The “G cell activity inhibitor,” which is the pinnacle of our NIGOD research, takes effect as soon as it enters Godzilla’s body.
However, it would take at least a few minutes, and at most 10 minutes, for the force to have any effect on that gigantic body, which was far larger than we had anticipated.
We have exhausted all our resources and now we just have to leave it to fate.
In the lab, everyone is still focused on the monitors showing images of the survivors, and it’s clear that the entire building is holding its breath as it watches the events unfold.
Only the clock on the wall was quietly ticking away. One minute, then two, the clock hands were about to hit three, and I could hear the murmurs of people from other departments.
“Chief…” one of the researchers called out to me.
I immediately understood what he was trying to say, but I did my best to calm everyone down, no, myself, by saying, “I understand how you feel, but let’s wait one more minute.”
Soon the clock hands passed three minutes and were approaching four minutes.
At that moment, my internal cell phone rang.
Before I could finish saying “hello,” my boss on the other end of the phone asked, “What do you think?”
I took a deep breath and answered clearly, in a voice that everyone in the lab could hear, “It appears that Godzilla has ceased activity due to the effects of the activity inhibitor.”
The atmosphere in the lab changed. Everyone was silently cheering in their hearts.
“I see, I agree. I will convey that to the higher-ups at headquarters and the government,” my boss said, ending the call.
As I put the form back in my pocket, I could feel the eyes of everyone in the lab on me.
“Everyone please return to your seats and wait for the announcement.”
With that, I returned to my seat and took a sip of the bottled water I had bought earlier.
Eventually, a voice came over the speaker to the same boss as before: “Attention all staff. Godzilla’s activity has been stopped by a cell inhibitor we developed. This concludes the Godzilla interception operation. I repeat…” The rest of the message was obscured by the loud cheers that echoed throughout the building.
“Godzilla” ceased its activities.
However, nothing is yet known about it. Its enormous size, its tough skin that cannot be scratched by conventional weapons, and the mysterious heat rays that it emits from its mouth…the list goes on and on, and there are so many mysteries surrounding this creature.
Until now, we have been desperately searching for traces of Godzilla, but this time we have an astonishingly large number of samples.
From now on, a huge amount of observation and experimentation will begin to unravel the mystery of this gigantic creature.
We don’t know how many years, or even decades, this will continue, but the real battle for us researchers is just beginning.
